Gozo Science Weekend

Gozo Science Weekend for Stella Maris College students

A 28-strong group of Form 1 and 2 students from Stella Maris College, Gzira recently attended a hands-on  Gozo Science Weekend.  Students could experience various applications of science in everyday life and at the same time follow the scientific process in organised tasks.  Team work was central as was the Lasallian spirit of community sharing and collaboration.  Students and teachers were engaged in collaborative learning tasks in real-life situations.

The event was barely underway when the students’ first task was to carry out a survey amongst Gozo ferry passengers about the use of science in their lives. Upon arrival at base, students immediately focused on their Cooking Challenge where they prepared supper in the form of delicious pizzas, producing the dough from scratch. While the pizzas were baking at David’s Bakery, the students set up their pitfall traps in a field close by.

There her passionate, hardworking adult students currently studying this craft shared their skills with teachers and students. Fabric testing took place adjacent to the workshop and students investigated flammability, strength and insulation.  They also planted cotton seedlings.

IMG_3077After lunch, students were given the opportunity to milk a goat en route to producing the traditional Gozitan ġbejna. This process was outlined by the farmer in his workshop. This was followed by a visit to the shooting range in Zebbug and the salt pans in Ta’ Xwejni.

IMG_0289After attending Holy Mass in Marsalforn and then dinner, the group ventured on an orienteering session from Marsalforn and Ghasri.  The lack of light pollution made the constellations intensely bright and the view from ta’ Gurdan Lighthouse, the final destination, prompted students and teachers to remember the Earth hour celebration in the form of a prayer of thanksgiving.

IMG_3170On the final day the young scientists presented one of the many tasks in a plenary session which brought to a close two whole days of scientific on site learning. The winning group was presented with book prizes and all the students were presented with a certificate of participation.

Twenty one boys gathered at Cirkewwa Ferry to cross the channel to Gozo for a hike with a difference ….. A religious hike, starting with a walk from Rabat to Ta’ Pinu Church in Gharb.  Along the way the boys were either talking socially, or admiring the nature around them or even taking photos of every motor cycle or luxurious car that passed along the way!
