Learning to code in Grade 1

The Bee-Bot is an exciting robot designed for use by young children.  The colourful, easy-to-operate, and friendly little robot is a perfect tool for teaching sequencing, estimation, problem-solving, and just having fun!

This morning, the Grade 1 students were welcomed by two “friendly” bee-bots, Mr Bee-Bot and Ms Bee-Bot.  The students learnt how to programme the Bee-Bots and make them move on a special designed mat.  The students programmed the Bee-Bot to move forward, turn, stop, flash lights and make sounds.  The themed mat was designed to teach the students planning and spatial awareness.

The students will have the opportunity to programme the Bee-Bots on different themed mats in the coming weeks.  A little surprise is waiting for them next week!

Some quotations from famous people about coding:

Stephen Hawking – “Whether you want to uncover the secrets of the universe, or you just want to pursue a career in the 21st century, basic computer programming is an essential skill to learn.”

Bill Gates – “Learning to write programs stretches your mind, and helps you think better, creates a way of thinking about things that I think is helpful in all domains.”

Investigating Paper Absorption – Grade 3

As part of the science topic ‘materials’ tackled in Grade 3, the students had to identify which type of paper, out of three different types: tissue paper, kitchen roll paper and writing paper, would absorb most water. In order to observe which paper absorbs water faster, we put few drops of three different food colouring: red, green and blue into the small beakers which were already filled up with water.

The boys were instructed to insert their paper in the respective beakers all at once and the rest of the boys looked carefully to notice and verify which paper absorbs the most.

The winning paper was the kitchen roll paper.

Early Narrative Writing at St Benild’s!

We start off by doing some story telling about what we are going to write about.  This story telling serves as an anticipatory set to hook the children in.  It’s like a preview to a movie you don’t want to give away too much, just enough to grab your audience’s attention.  Our boys sit back and enjoy hearing their teacher sharing stories from her own daily life!
